Why couples reach out

Couples come to us at different points. You might be:

  • Both wanting help understanding what happened and what comes next.
  • Looking for a careful, structured place to have very hard conversations.
  • Wanting each partner’s experience and needs to be taken seriously.
  • Unsure what your relationship needs, and wanting guidance as you decide.

Room for each partner

In couples work, each partner’s experience matters. The partner working on sex addiction or unwanted sexual behavior has their own recovery work. The partner who has been betrayed has their own needs, which deserve care in their own right.

Couples work does not assume a particular outcome. Each partner chooses whether to take part.

How the Becoming Approach shapes couples work

  1. Recovery work

Later recovery tasks in the Carnes pathway extend recovery into intimacy and the couple relationship, including Succeed in Intimacy, Commit/Recommit to Primary Relationship Recovery, and Explore Coupleship Recovery. These are part of the recovering partner’s own pathway.

  2. A vision of healthy relationship

Two of the 12 dimensions speak directly to relationships. Relationships: fostering authentic, respectful relationships and repairing bonds through patience, growth, and connection. Partnership: an interdependent, equal relationship that strives for both intimacy and oneness.

  3. Careful preparation

Formal disclosures and complex relational repair belong in appropriately prepared individual or couple work.
